The children are settled at school, there is a hint of Autumn in the air and the trees are beginning to bear their autumn colours.
I am slowly settling into the groove of a new school year.
The end of the school holidays and the start of a new term finds me in a reflective mood.
September is the start of our new financial year and rather than rushing in and starting all over again, I try and step back, edit where I am and look at the bigger picture.
On a personal note, this allows me to look at where I’ve been and, where I need to get to or at least set a course.
The choices and decisions we make help decide how we edit our life and more importantly what we need to do to make the change and get to where we want to go.
Like many working women we put ourselves second behind the needs of our partners and children forgetting that we are the main cog in the big family wheel.
We are the glue that holds it all together.
But we have the choice to rewrite the chapters of our life story and how it ends.
We can either accept where we are or, make those changes we so often think about but don’t make either through fear holding us back, time or other constraints that make it difficult for us to make changes.
Trying to create a life that is fulfilling is a great concept and requires commitment, dedication and thought in other words, it’s a real-life challenge.
Finding time to think about how our lives are working and what needs to change or binned takes time.
Taking the bold step of finding out what is working or what isn’t helps determine how the rest of our life will look like.
But all of the above takes courage even if change must happen we are still creatures of habit.
Making that bold move to change things that are negative in our lives like a bad friend, a marriage or relationship that no longer makes you happy, a job that you loathe.
Requires taking control and making a decision to make things happen but, once a decision is made it can be empowering.
Making a choice that puts you in control and makes you feel fulfilled, less fraught and stressed takes time and thought and it is not easy especially if it necessitates a job change and you’re the main breadwinner.
If it means the experience enlightens you and enables you to become a better version of yourself then the whole process is worthwhile.
Making change happen is about standing back and evaluating your life honestly.
What experiences have you had that have added real value to your life?
What doesn’t work for you?
What have you done that really inspired you and made you want to do it again?
What do you love to do but can’t because of fear, lack of time or procrastination?
As human beings, we have the power of choice the power to make things happen yet in spite of this we are scared to take that first step because we lack the confidence to make changes that will ultimately lead to a better way of life whatever that may be.
In the words of Victor Frankl: “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
